Doubled the size of the Behavioral health unit
Commissioner Mapps understands that lasting police reform isn't just about new rules—it's about building better structures, programs, and partnerships that foster the change Portlanders want to see.
The Behavioral Health Unit is a standout example of this approach. By pairing police officers with licensed mental health clinicians, this innovative program provides a coordinated response to some of the city’s most complex situations. Commissioner Mapps worked to expand this important unit, doubling its size by bringing more sworn officers onto the team and increasing the number of clinicians available to assist them.
This enhanced unit can now respond to calls that require both safety and specialized care—such as incidents involving armed or suicidal individuals or those happening inside homes—cases that Portland Street Response cannot address. The presence of a police officer ensures safety, while the trained clinician provides a comprehensive, compassionate social work approach, putting the individual’s well-being first.
Commissioner Mapps successfully advocated for increased funding for the expansion of this unit.
Make it stand out.

Dream it.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
