Behind the Scenes on the Campaign Trail
Rene Gonzalez’s mayoral campaign recently reached out, upset about one of my tweets.
Honestly, I was confused, because everything in it was true.
After reviewing the tweet, I’m guessing this sentence hit a nerve:
“Rene Gonzalez has traffic violations, questionable use of public funds, AND lied about a Black woman attacking him.”
The traffic violations and questionable use of public funds? Those are just facts.
So, is the real issue my claim that Rene “lied about a Black woman attacking him”? Well, Trimet has video footage. You can watch it for yourself and decide:
Was Commissioner Gonzalez really “accosted by a woman on the train”?

PROTEC 17 ENDORSES MINGUS MAPPS!
PROTEC 17, the union representing nearly 1,000 public sector employees in Portland, has officially endorsed Commissioner Mingus Mapps in his bid for Mayor of Portland. The union, which includes many employees of the City’s Bureau of Technology Services, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), Bureau of Environmental Services, Portland Water Bureau, and the newly formed Portland Planning & Development, cited Mapps’ leadership, financial stewardship, and commitment to public employees and infrastructure as key reasons for their endorsement.
As Commissioner of PBOT, Mapps successfully closed a $32 million budget shortfall, saving over 100 jobs in the process, many of which were held by union members. He also played a critical role in ensuring the success of Portland’s "Fixing Our Streets" bond, which passed with over 70% approval. These efforts have allowed for critical street and infrastructure maintenance to continue while protecting family-wage jobs for those who keep Portland moving.
“We’re proud to support Mingus Mapps for Mayor,” said Paul Cone, a Bureau of Technology Services employee and president of the Portland chapter of PROTEC 17. “He has consistently listened to the concerns of frontline workers who understand the challenges the city faces. He has worked with us to make important improvements that have saved money, improved working conditions, and ultimately provided the public with better services. We think he’s the obvious choice as the leader best suited to take Portland through this time of transition.”
Mapps expressed his gratitude for the endorsement, emphasizing his deep respect for public sector workers who help keep the city’s essential services running. “I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of PROTEC 17,” said Mapps. “I’ve had the privilege of working alongside so many dedicated professionals during these past four years, and I’m committed to ensuring they have the resources and support they need to continue serving Portland.”
With Portland facing critical decisions on the future of its government and billions in major infrastructure projects set to begin in the next several years, Mapps is running for Mayor to ensure experienced leadership guides the city through this pivotal time. He remains committed to prioritizing core public services, supporting workers, and delivering on a vision that keeps Portland’s communities clean, safe, and connected.
The Oregonian will not be considering my candidacy
This Race Belongs to the Voters!
Friends, I have some deeply disturbing news. The Oregonian has decided not to interview me as part of their endorsement process for Portland mayor. Why? I’m wondering that too.
I’ve served Portland with honor for nearly four years on the City Council. I’m the fourth African American to do so in our city’s history and hold a PhD in Government from Cornell. Despite that, The Oregonian won’t even consider my candidacy.
There’s no scandals disqualifying me, like my top two opponents. And character clearly isn’t the issue—my opponent Carmen Rubio, who has racked up over 150 parking tickets, is being considered. Rene Gonzalez, also has traffic violations, questionable use of public funds, AND lied about a black woman attacking him. Yet these are your “chosen,” candidates.
Let’s be honest: Portland’s power brokers don’t want me to be your next mayor. I’m not part of their establishment. I’m not rich. I cannot be bought. And I won’t be intimidated by undemocratic tactics.
This election is too important to be decided by backroom deals and special interests.
Your vote matters!
When your ballot arrives, I ask for your vote to ensure Portland’s future belongs to the people—not the privileged few, by marking Mingus Mapps as your number 1 choice!

KBOO - Why I want to be your next mayor
I am excited to share the first part of a 13-part breakdown of my Running on Air interview with Lanita Duke at KBOO
We dove into so many topics, that I figured each part would be a great opportunity to drill down on some key issues on Portland's plate today.
Over the next several days, we'll be covering everything from public safety to climate change, and the future of livability in Portland.
In part one, we discussed my reasons for wanting to be your next mayor, our new form of government (and what I see as critical parts of this transition), and why it is so important to get this right!
We also talk about my background, and how that impacts my views on Portland today, and for the future of a brighter and more representative future for local government in our city.

Oregonian - Read Portland mayor and City Council candidates’ answers on clean energy
Mingus Mapps: I believe the Portland Clean Energy Fund should be used for its intended purpose — investing in climate solutions. I would halt its use for backfilling budget holes, as it compromises the fund’s mission.
Evening with the Oregon Tradeswomen
Big thanks to Oregon Tradeswomen for recently sharing the evening with us. This incredible organization advocates for access, opportunity, and equity for women in skilled construction trades. Your work is making a real difference!
The WNBA is coming to Portland!
Big news for the future of Portland sports!
I don’t know about you, but I think that Rip City is ready to rally behind our WNBA team: joining the Trailblazers, the Timbers, and the Thorns, making portland a true sports powerhouse - let’s not forget about the Hops, the Winterhawks, and the Pickles (who brought home the championship this summer!)
With local spots like Sports Bra receiving national attention, to me, this next step signals a new and exciting era for sports in Portland!
Today is National Voter Registration Day!
This year, Portland is moving to ranked-choice voting, and the future of our city is at stake. With the big changes ahead—a new city manager system and a more representative council—Portland needs a mayor who has the experience to lead on day one.
I’m asking you to rank me #1 on your ballot because I have the experience and commitment to move Portland forward. Register to vote today, and let’s shape the future of our city!

KBOO running on air interview
Had an amazing interview with LaNita Duke on KBOO yesterday evening!
We covered everything from fixing Portland’s outdated government structure to tackling homelessness, improving public safety, and making sure every Portlander can afford to live in this city we love.
It’s a big conversation, but don’t worry, because we’ll be breaking down each topic in the coming days to dive deeper. For now, catch the full interview here and stay tuned for more details on how we can build a better future for Portland.
Watching the presidential debate tonight!
Fired up for tonight’s presidential debate! This is a crucial moment for our future, and I’m proud to stand with our future President Harris as she fights for economic progress for working families and champions reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy.
Don’t miss it—tune in and stay informed!
Commissioner rubio has how many parking tickets?
You saw the news; Would you expect the same treatment?
Yesterday, two of my opponents were exposed for egregious traffic violations. Here's the truth: I don’t have a single traffic citation.
Why? Because I play by the same rules as every other Portlander. But let’s be real—this isn’t just about traffic tickets. It’s about privilege. My opponents' actions show they feel that they are above the law, a luxury most Portlanders, especially those of us from marginalized communities, don’t have.As a Black man, I don’t get to flout the rules. I live by them, and I’ll make sure our leaders do too. If I had over 150 violations in recent years, not only would I not be on the City Council today, I would be in jail.
We may live in the same town, but we live in very different universes.
If you’re ready for a mayor who plays by the same rules as you, vote Mingus Mapps.
It’s time for fairness, for accountability, and for change.
Oregonian - Portland mayoral hopeful Mingus Mapps qualifies for $100K in public matching funds
Our campaign made the match, and we are glad to see local media covering that!
Labor day with the NW Labor council
Happy Labor Day, Portland! Shout out to UFCW, Local 555 on the line at Fred Meyer.
Today at the annual NW Oregon Labor Council’s Labor Day picnic, we celebrated the hard-working union members who built and continue to sustain our vibrant city and state. It was awesome to shake hands with union members from all walks of life. All workers have benefited from the work of organized labor. We have better work hours, working conditions, and benefits because of the decades of fighting for worker’s rights. We aren’t done yet. As Mayor I look forward to standing side-by-side fighting for worker’s rights.
Judge approves policy, but delays oversight board
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
The work on the settlement agreement has been ongoing since 2012, and my office has been actively engaged in this issue for the last 3.5 years. I understand the Mayor's frustration with the ruling yesterday, and I’m concerned about further delays to this process. I’m also confident this council is more than capable of making qualified appointments to the nominating committee.
However, in 4 months, Portlanders will elect an entirely new Mayor and City Council. They are the ones ultimately responsible for continuing this critical work. We must trust democracy.

UCFW Local 555 is on strike!
I am encouraged to see productive conversations happening around the bargaining table this week as nearly 5,000 Fred Meyer workers strike against unfair labor practices. The progress made thus far is a step in the right direction, but there is still much more to be done.
Our grocery workers keep our city running, and they deserve to be treated with dignity.
I fully support the Union's push for stronger grievance and arbitration procedures, better overtime conditions, and fair compensation for the costs required by the state. Every worker in Portland deserves the opportunity to earn a living wage, access robust healthcare, and retire with security.
These workers need to know that the community has their back!

Oregonian - I am tied with rubio (Before the scandal)
The Oregonian covred some recent polling on the Mayor’s race.
These polls show that 40% of Portlanders have not yet made up their mind about who they would support when ballots drop.
An important thing that popped out to me is that, even with how our campaign has been covered, we are in a dead heat with Commissioner Rubio!
EDIT: It is important to note that this was BEFORE Commissioner Rubio was found to have over 150 tickets, 6 license suspensions, and 2 vehicle impounds.
